SECRET SOCIETY RING

A). I dig the work of H.R. Giger.
B). I've always wanted to be in a secret society.
C). I totally want this H.R. Giger "Emblem for a Secret Society Ring."
D). I hate meetings, so it don't actually want to be in a secret society - I just want the ring and the mysterious prestige.

THINGS I LIKE, THINGS I DISLIKE

"Foutaises" ("Things I Like, Things I Dislike") - a short 1989 film by director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (that guy who did "Amélie" and "Delicatessen").

There is something admirable about knowing yourself this well:

HOBO SIGNS

A TRIP TO THE MOON

Georges and Gaston Méliès' 1902 film "Le Voyage Dans la Lune" ("A Trip to the Moon") is the first science fiction movie, ever. This version has narration with a charming French accent:

ALONE IN THE WILDERNESS

An excerpt from Dick Proenneke's 1968 experience of living alone in the Alaskan wilderness. He documented his life there with a movie camera; he hand-made everything he needed: his cabin, his food, and many of his tools. It's fun watching him make stuff:

SHRUNKEN HEADS

Salangome Imports is one of the few places you can buy a decent reproduction of an Amazonian shrunken head (known as a tsantsa). Perfect for any rear-view mirror. Bonus Round: How shrunken heads are made by the Jivaro (the Shuar) of Ecuador.

SHOOTIN' GALLERY

There is a certain beauty in the simplicity of many of the old 8-bit games of the Atari 2600. Yesterday, I was playing the classic game "Shootin' Gallery" with the Stella Atari 2600 emulator on my laptop (free game ROMs from Atari Age). The gameplay is a little like Space Invaders, but the monkeys and traincars don't shoot back. This kind of game won't keep you enraptured for hours, but it is perhaps the perfect way to squander 20 minutes of life.

GREAT KUNG FU FILMS (part 2)

"THE 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN"
(a.k.a. – “The Master Killer” or “Shaolin Master Killer”)
Director: Liu Chia-Liang
Starring: Gordon Liu
Awesomeness: secret Shaolin Kung Fu training
Released: 1978

San Te is a student and rebel conspirator, working against the Manchu government. Manchu officials kill a number of San Te’s classmates and family members; on the run, he flees to the Shaolin Temple. After a year wait, San Te is admitted into Kung Fu training, where he graduates through each of the 35 “chambers” of Kung Fu training: each is a challenge that strengthens his body and hones his fighting skills. He returns to his community to seek revenge against the local Manchu government and to train his people to defend themselves with Kung Fu. This Shaw Brothers classic is often considered one of the greatest Kung Fu films of all time.

WAFFLES + LIVINGROOM = AWESOME

C2 Color has a paint color called "WAFFLE." Being a big fan of breakfast, I am enamored with the idea of having a livingroom the color of waffle.

And the olfactory bonus round: a maple syrup candle. I hate scented candles (Hell probably smells like scented candles), but this candle has maple syrup in it and it makes your home smell like a pancake house (or Vermont).

Combining the two = "The Livingroom of Eternal Breakfast."

STENCIL RUG

My friend's warehouse studio needed something to tie the room together, so I spraypainted a rug on the concrete floor.

OLD CAP'N CRUNCH IS THE NEW CAP'N CRUNCH

I love that they're running the old box artwork for Cap'n Crunch. He was much more respectable back then: he wielded a sword, fought French pirates, and drank nothing but rum.

MORT KÜNSTLER, ADVENTURE ARTIST

You've probably already seen the artworks of Mort Künstler, because they are everywhere: the covers of Men's Pulp Adventure Magazines in the 50's and 60's, box art for model kits, movie posters, and even the back covers of Mad magazine. Mort paints adventures the way we imagine they should be: large beasts, savage natives, ancient treasures, angry soldiers, and topless women.

• A nice archive of Künstler's magazine work at the American Art Archives.

• A few of Künstler's awesome underwater action scenes.

• A large gallery of Men's Pulp Adventure Magazine covers on Flickr, by SubtropicBob.

• A gallery of Mort Künstler's pin-up girls.

GREAT KUNG FU FILMS (part 1)

If you ever plan to create an epic collection of Kung Fu films, the following is certainly on the list:

"ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND"
(a.k.a. - "Spooky Encounters")
Director: Sammo Hung
Starring: Sammo Hung
Awesomeness: Zombie Kung-Fu; Sammo Hung doing "Monkey Style" Kung Fu
Released: 1980
The wealthy Master Tam is sleeping with the wife of his employee Bold Cheung (Sammo Hung) and decides to put an end to the affair. . . and an end to Bold Cheung. He frames Cheung for the murder of his own wife, and he hires the wizard Chin Hoi to kill Cheung through dark supernatural means. Tsui, the wizard brother of Chin Hoi, comes to the aid of Cheung – teaching him the secrets of protection from the undead controlled by Chin Hoi. Cheung endures the supernatural challenges set before him, evades the police, and comes to realize that his employer Master Tam is behind all of this. In the final battle, the wizards Chin Hoi and Tsui struggle to determine who is the most powerful, and Cheung battles adversaries with an epic display of Monkey Style Kung Fu. A good combination of humor, storyline, and Kung Fu action.

GAKKEN KITS

My childhood would have been so much more fulfilling if these Japanese Gakken science kits were around. Last year, I broke down and bought the Aurorarium Kit: it makes cool aurora borealis-like lights on the wall and ceiling.

The instructions are in Japanese, but they are popular enough that English versions of the instructions are usually available online.

Make your own Edo Period Mechanical Clock • an oldschool record-playing Gramophone • a reproduction of Gailieo's Telescope • Vacuum Tube iPod Amplifier • an awesome Mechanical Tea-Serving Robot • your very own household Planetarium • an old-timey Vacuum Tube Radio • a Twin Lens Reflex Camera • a cool Mechanical Crab • an Edison Cylinder Recorder
